Okay I have a question...
The other day while talking with some friends we came upon the topic of Legolas never getting married.
A few of us just assumed he didn't since in the end he sailed with Gimli. That and the fact no wife is mentioned.
A few others came up the idea that it was SILLY to assume he never did. As we all know he was a fairly handsome elf and probably saught after my quite a few maidens. They believe he did since he started his own colony but that she probably sailed before him.
Would any one care to give me their opinion??
I'm considering a story but at this time and point am way to confused to go any further.

Hmm, I don't think he ever married. There is no mention of a wife (although there is no mention of a lot of things in his life). I just get the feeling that he hadn't found a wife by the time he sailed. Of course I have no textual evidence to back this up, but that's just the impression I got.

Hi Carol,
Indeed, the lack of mention does not rule out the possibility that Legolas was married. Tolkien wrote very much in the manner of old sagas, which means that lesser peoples (minorities, slaves, women, children, etc.) were not mentioned unless they played a crucial role in the tale or otherwise had some significant impact on the storyteller.
So, is it possible Legolas was married? Absolutely. Especially if you place his begetting early in the Third Age, so that he was married (and maybe even an ada) before the Shadow returned.
Do I think he was married? No. As I mentioned on another thread (Legolas's Age, maybe), I think that the elves born in the Third Age were not eager to get married because of the generally instability and air of doom. Elves preferred to have children in times of peace and stability, when both parent were likely to be around to nuture the child. Though marriage does not automatically mean begetting children, elves tended to beget children in the first few centuries after marrying, so I think they probably were not inclined to wed unless they were prepared to beget children. (A good illustration of this is Amroth and Nimrodel, whom, upon falling in love, promptly decided to depart from Middle-earth for the peace and safety of Valinor.)

I don't think Legolas was married prior to the quest. The idea just doesn't seem to fit in with the character Tolkien wrote. It's hard to explain but Legolas doesn't feel like a married person to me or even like someone who's unmarried and in love.
He could have married after the quest. But that feels even more wrong somehow.
I've read a couple of stories where Legolas was married and one where Legolas's beloved sailed prior to their marriage. But most stories (other than pure Legomances) have Legolas single. Although canon doesn't specify, the general belief is clearly that he stayed single prior to sailing.
So I guess my hard to explain feeling about Legolas's marriage status may be hard to explain but commonly felt. ;D

I think that in one of the HoME books (I can't remember which one, but it had an Alan Lee dustjacket), there's a discarded epilogue where Sam's kids are asking about what became of the Fellowship, and Sam mentions that Legolas never married, the implication being that he never quite got around to it, what with the disruption of the War and then setting up the colony in Ithilien, then schlepped Gimli off to Valinor and they haven't been heard from since.
It probably wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he might have found Ms. Right in Valinor, as so many Elves had sailed by the end of the Third Age that the selection was probably better over there.

Oh yeah! I have that HoME book. I got it for Christmas last year. You're right. There is a bit more info about post-WotR life for the Company members in that dialogue. It's upstairs right now. I'll try to remember to look it over the next time I'm upstairs and report if it says anything about Legolas's marital status.

Thanks girls!! I'll have to remember to print this out so the next time the subject comes up I'll have more then just my own opinion to show them. I knew I was right and now I have proof, well about as much proof as one may have on this subject lol. ;D

No dice, ladies. I read through both versions of the Epilogue in HoME 9, Sauron Defeated (aka The End of the Third Age). Neither version says anything about Legolas's marital status. The only piece of new information regarding Legolas is that he set Arod free while at Isengard during the homeward journey to allow him to run home to Rohan. I guess the canonical answer to Legolas: Married or Single? is still waiting some unknown letter or note.

I am thinking that maybe after Legolos sailed with Gimli he and Tauriel may have married. It's highly unlikely but that's what I think. Sorry I couldn't decide what to think so I'm like maybe he finally got with the girl he loved in the first place. I mean i know Tauriel loved him as a friend but after Kili's death she may have started to like him>
Again just a thought
