I reckon most everyone will see this somewhere else, but since the board's a little slow, I figure "what the hey? Might as well post this here." Who knows? It might even start a small discussion! That is excellent, LKK. I think that Aragorn must have caused Legolas to think 'you fool' on many occassions, but especially at various points in this battle. That image of Legolas kneeling at the top of the stairs with one last arrow is one of my most favorite of all three books. ;D

The "Ascend, you fool!" goes back to Gandalf's exit line in Moria, "Fly, you fools!" IMO, only friends who really care about each other can get away with using the name "fool".
I love the image of Legolas on the steps as well. That's one instance where I liked Ralph Bakshi's animated scene better than what PJ ended up showing us.
Funny tidbit on this. I had some trouble with the formatting when I first sent this to the MC Yahoo group. So as a test, I sent a formatted copy to another private Yahoo group that some friends & I have set up. My friends know next to nothing about LOTR, so I told them to just ignore the message; it was just a test.
One of them wrote back and worriedly asked if they ever found Gimli. ;D

Aw! I hope you assured her that they do. LOL! You have to be careful about doing such things, LKK, for the next thing you know, you'll have converted a perfectly innocence person who had otherwise been wandering merrily through life with no knowledge at all of Middle-earth...

I told her that they found Gimli the next day and that he was safe except for his head wound which he insisted was nothing to worry about.
She wrote back, "Isn't that just like a man? Probably bleeding like crazy and had a concession, but it wasn't anything to worry about." LOL --- My friend has some issues with stubborn male pride.
I may convert her to LOTR yet. She hasn't even seen the films, but she often reads my fanfic. She loved the little twins discussing mothers, laughed at the hobbit lass's questions about Father Yule, and felt very sad about Thranduil's mother's grief. And now, she's worried about Gimli! I think I've ensnared her good. ;D

I liked this drabble. I think the battle at Helm's Deep is ripe with SO many possibilities for plot bunnies. Heck, I jumped on one myself, but I never thought to do something like you did!
I especially liked the ascend you fool bit...that was great...I didn't liken it immediately to the bit with Gandalf in Moria, but when you mentioned it I was like, oh duh! VERY cool!
Please do feel free to write more drabble. (Is drabble considered like a 100 word fic or something??? I forget.)

If the drabble has a title, the title can be no longer than 15 words. There are some variants to drabbles: a half-drabble is 50 words long, a double drabble is 200 words long. I suppose you could have a drabble and a half (150 words) or a double drabble and a half (250 words). But those are pretty rare. I saw a triple drabble once (300 words). By that time, I think we're getting close to a short story format though. I like writing drabbles. They're addictive. I suspect there will be more in the future. I'm glad you liked it Gwenneth!  |
