Okay. Bad news first. In an upcoming story, I will have to send an Elf to at least one healer, possibly two, if his injuries are severe enough.
*readers shriek and faint*
Well, now that that's out of the way. . . Everyone in Middle-earth seems to think that Elvish healing is pretty special. What do you think is the secret ingredient? Do the Elves know how to make powerful medicines? Are they fabulous surgeons? Do they have a kind of mind-meld trick, where they lay on hands and it really works? How exactly do you think Elvish healers make people better? Because I'm going to want to describe it, in sufficiently excruciating detail, and I'd like a few opinions before I begin injuring my Elves.

My vision of elven healers has been formed based on the works of several fanfic authors. But they're authors who are good canonites, so I feel comfortable trusting their interpretations.
I see elven healing as a sharing of energy or spirit. I believe the elvish word is fea (with 2 dots over the a). The healer shares his spirit with the patient, perhaps directing it somehow to the injured area, thereby increasing the patient's own healing potential.
As for the practical side of healing, as we tend to think of it, elven healers would have a good deal of practical knowledge.
Keep in mind, as I'm sure you know, terms like sterilization, germs, and many other familiar to us medical concepts would be beyond them. An elven healer might have practise long enough to notice that when a knife is heated (i.e. sterilized) the patient is less likely to suffer complications of surgery. But he is unlikely to use the word germ to describe why he is heating the surgery knife.
All of this is personal opinion rather than canon knowledge. So please take what I said with several grains of salt.

Karri told me one of my favorite subjects was being discussed! Hope you don't mind if I add my two cents worth. I think of two things, along the lines of what LKK mentioned. Elves seem very in tune with nature and well studied in their environments, and I think they might be well versed in herbal remedies. Both Elrond and the wood elves of Greenwood had significant contact with other races, so even though they might not fall ill with disease themselves, it is very likely they had contact with others who did suffer illness. I think they would know of remedies to treat many of the common symptoms of disease. The special elven part I think might stem from several things. First, we know that elves needed little sleep and that they regenerated and healed from wounds very quickly. Young elves and the injured did require sleep, and sleep is of course when growth and healing occur in us humans. Elves seemed to be able to do most 'regeneration' while awake, which could imply they had some control over it, that it was a matter of the will vs something the body did just because it was designed to do so. I have extrapolated that to say that if an elf can will himself to heal, one with well developed skills could transfer that to another. Second, we see several examples of elves being able to look into the mind of another (Galadriel) and see what is within the heart, and elves able to communicate without speaking (G&C, Elrond and others on the way home from Arwen and Aragorn's wedding). The mind is a powerful tool in healing the body, so perhaps they can encourage regeneration from within, if they have learned to use their skills thusly. But also this is where the touch of the soul might come into play. If fea(r) are bonded in marriage, the strength of one fea passed to another in childbearing, and nurtured and supported in childhood, could someone well studied and trained in the healing arts (or one with a natural gift, as I have given Elrond) be able to use their own strength and energy of soul to heal another? It could deplete the healer, so they must be skilled. The first three situations could imply that all elves have some ability - a healer may have special skills, learned or innate. The special elven ability, at least as I see it, can encourage the healing of bones, of infection, and the regneration of tissue - all things the body can do itself, just enhanced. Most of what they do might simply be to make the body work better itself (as elves cannot stop aging of humans) yet perhaps they do more with other elves, who have some innate ability themselves. I think Elrond and Galadriel might also use their Rings to expand their healing and regenerative powers, as we know by description the Three had ability to heal and preserve. When Frodo is brought into Rivendell with the shard of the Morgul blade still in him, migrating slowly to his heart, where, if it would pierce the heart, would claim his soul essentially and make him into a wraith, neither living or dead. Yet Elrond manages to remove it. We have a 'magical' shard, seemingly living and purposeful, and yet Elrond as a master healer could 'remove' it. Did he dig around surgically? Did he locate it and dissolve it? Remove its power? There are so many interesting possibilities to explain this, and throwing Vilya into the mix, when one considers Vilya's power, makes it all the more fascinating. Elrond also put Frodo into a healing sleep, but remember that Aragorn (hands of the king are hands of the healer) did this for Frodo and Sam too. Aragorn's skillswere special as Numenorian and king, but in Elrond's case it fits with the mind-meld sort of thing. Of course, this is pretty much all my speculation. I would not take it as canon, as Tolkien never describes how Elrond heals Frodo, or what miruvor does, exactly, nor how Glorfindel's mere touch aided and strengthed Frodo in Flight to the Ford. In Morgoth's Ring we don't know exactly how the bonding of the souls occur, nor how the transfer of strength occurred from husband to wife, and wife to child. Galadriel seemed to have provided comfort and rest to some of the Fellowship through her little mind meld thing, but we don't know how. But there are these examples Tolkien gave us to fall back on, and make out of it what you will

So speaketh one of the fanfic authors I alluded to as being good canonites whose interpretations I trust. Much better explained than what I said.

Ah, thanks LKK!
I'm always hesitant to spout off on my ideas, but I am glad to know you think it fits fairly well with what Tolkien did write.
