Speaking of new challenges....
This one is simply. Write a story of any length (from drabble to novel) using as the primary character a canon character that is new to you (meaning that you have not used him/her/it previously in your writing.)

Where Is It? By Gwenneth
In response to a challenge by Karri: This is the shortest fic I have EVER done...it is probably AU because I do not remember the events of the Hobbit. I have never written Gollum into ANYTHING...so it covers the Challenge there. Whatcha think?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The being flung himself from crevice to crevice, peering frantically downward into the dark recesses of the cave.
He mumbled over and over again, the same phrase, laden with sorrow and panic. "Where is it? Where is it?"
For a time he, if you could call the being a he, said nothing else. It was dank and dark in this cave, leaving little light for the being to search by. But he seemed undetered by the darkness, rather he seemed well-suited and comfortable in the miserable abode.
"Where...where is it?"
Crevices exhausted, the being began a search of the far corners of the monstrous cavern. He would search the bottom of the water last, it would take longer and be the most difficult. But he would search forever if he had to.
"Where is it?"
Not finding his quarry anywhere on land, the being flung himself to the ground and beat it with his balled up fists. "Where is the precious! Where is it? Gollum has lost the precious!"
His wails reached the ears of the chubby Hobbit in the corner, idly twisting the golden circle upon his finger, hidden from view by a magic he did not understand.
And he felt sorrow for this Gollum, sorrow and pity. Perhaps it would be better to just end the miserable wretch's life. Perhaps he should kill the creature and end the pain and sorrow.
What could he have lost that is so precious to him? the Hobbit thought, scratching his leg where it had begun to cramp.
He had no idea what this "precious" was, but it meant a lot to the creature. Watching the being gather himself and throw himself headfirst into the water, Bilbo decided not to kill him.
Instead, he silently wished him luck in his search and left.
"Where is it?" Gollum wailed as he broke the surface of the pond.
Bilbo twisted the gold circle upon his finger.
THE END

It is a bit AU, but very good for going from memory. Nicely done characterization of Gollum and entertaining to boot. Thank you! ;D

THANKS Karri! Glad you liked it. I just got bored and figured I would post it. I haven't read the Hobbit in SO long, but I was almost certain that Bilbo met with Gollum near an underground pond. Am i insane? Or did that happen?

Yup, Bilbo did meet Gollum near an underground pond, but he didn't put the ring on until he after he fled back up the passage, and Gollum figured out right away that Bilbo had found the ring, so he didn't spend a great deal of time searching for it. It is still a good fic, though. I have just read The Hobbit a few more times than any sane and rational person ought.

Thanks Joee, and thanks Karri for proving that I'm NOT insane...least not in thinking that Bilbo and Gollum met at a pond! And yeah, I guess my thingy was AU then!!! He but the image of Gollum scrambling around searching was just too much to pass up!
Thanks for the challenge. Now, to see if anyone answers one of mine!
BUT I can't wait here and stare at the message board, I must go help wash dishes in the bathtub! We don't have a kitchen sink...
Hehe....AND I have to remember to set the clock back so i am not late for the Tae Kwon Do color best test I'm SUPPOSED to sit on the test panel for.
