Okay, here's the challenge. Many fics kill off Legolas mother. My challenge:
During the Hobbit, when Bilbo and the dwarves are in Mirkwood, there is no mention of Legolas' mother. Write a story, whatever length, where Legolas' mother is NOT dead...that explains why she was no seen by Bilbo. There are no other guidelines, just that she cannot be dead. Preferably, she should be in Mirkwood...and Legolas with her...but that is NOT a requirement.
I really hope someone latches onto this, I would like to see what people come up with. If I find the time I might post an answer to this challenge.

Ooooooo sounds very interesting. Maybe I will give it a try, but don't expect something right away because I have 5 other stories in progress. Good Idea though! ;D

Bad Gwenneth! No planting plot bunnies in my mind when I have mid terms next week! I have to study not write fan fiction! But I like this idea and might give it a shot when I have time.

Well, Legolas is not in it, but is does have the Queen in Mirkwood and explains why Bilbo did not see her. :-D
Startled Ears Lifted by Karri
“It will be good to be home!” The Queen of the great Wood heard her grandson’s eager voice announce. She smiled distractedly, but her gaze remained fixed on the trees. Bewildering whispers rustled through the fading leaves.
When first the entourage had entered the wood, the air hummed with excitement and the gleeful rumor “Smaug is dead!” But as they drew ever the nearer to the palace, the mood seemed to shift. It was so subtle a variance that at first she had not been sure of it. She was certain now, though. It was no longer excitement that thrummed in her ears.
Her grandson’s voice chattered on in the background of her thought, and she caught the words, “Daerada will be pleased with the wine.” The Queen smiled. The wine of Dorwinia was ever pleasing to the King’s palate, but the vintage served by Dorwinia’s Master at the feast celebrating his new grandchild had been extraordinary. If the barrels given in gift to his departing guests were of the same stock Thranduil would be very pleased, indeed!
Ai, Thranduil! The tumult of the leaves had increased at his mention, and it caste a shadow of fear over the Queen’s heart. She closed her eyes, intent upon understanding the agitated whispers, and her breath quickened. “The king is gone,” they said, “to the Mountain he marches…to war and slaughter!”
oOoOoOoOo
Alas, it was very short, I know, but what can you do when the bunny says 'stop!' -- just think of it as a double drabble and a quarter.

Nice, Karri. But I admit to being a little dense. The Queen is Thranduil's wife who has traveled to Dorwinia. That explains why she wasn't around for Bilbo to see. Good solution.
The grandson, he's the one I'm confused about. He would be Legolas's nephew from an unnamed OC sibling? Is that right?

In my head, he is Belegorn (from Bitterness, chapter 1), but since Legolas's naneth isn't alive in Bitterness, I did not name him. Most likely, the whole thing would be better if I just gave in and had her riding besides Legolas and changed the Daerada to Adar, but I am too fond of the notion that Legolas fought at his ada's side in the battle to send him off with the Queen. That's for taking a gander at this and commenting. ;D

You know, really though, sending Legolas with her would explain why Bilbo did not recognize him at the Council, so....

I think I like the revised version better from a literary standpoint if nothing else. Looking at the piece as a standalone vignette, the existence of an unnamed OC sibling's grandson is a little confusing to the reader. (Or maybe I'm just basically dense. Which is entirely possible!)
Also, as you said, the second version does better explain the fact that Legolas seems to be an unknown quantity to most of the Council attendees.

It's the second version we will keep them. ;D
You are right. It works better as a stand-alone with Legolas. Thank you for your helpfulness.

I don't think I ever replied to this!!! Huh...bad Gwenneth, I started the challenge after all! I did like this, Karri. It sounds like a perfectly plausible explanation for why Bilbo didn't see Legolas' mother. (And why he didn't recognize Legolas at the council.) So yeah, the second version is best!!! Thanks for answering the challenge!!
