I logged out of FF.Net and clicked the Report Abuse button on one of my own stories and I was given the following options:
-Not allowed: interactive, chat/script, real person, mst, and etc. -Non-Story: lists, notes, polls, announcements, and ect. -Disregard for proper language: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and etc. -Rating: explicit content or adult content above current rating -Rating: language above current rating -Rating: violence above current rating -Duplicate post -Title not G rated -Summary not G rated -Not the property of uploading writer -In the wrong category or wrong site -Chapter anot not using the chaptering feature
Then below was a box for the abuse description.
My guess is people just pick an option and then make up some bogus description (if they even make up one at all), then the story is deleted.

Hmmm...I all makes me terribly curious...I must just have to make up something to post so I can report myself and see what it is all about. Lol, this post wasn't even up when I was typing my responce to the various claims but I guess curious minds think alike.

-Disregard for proper language: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and etc. I'm guessing not too many people report abuse on ff.net using that reason as the explanation. *slaps herself on the hand* Bad LKK. Bad. Bad.

Thanks Joee for the information.
Not using the report option myself I was really curious how it worked. Now I don't have to wonder anymore. ;D
I just never realized they would have that many options. With all those it's amazing anyone ever gets to post lmao.

There are different catagories of abuse listed under the report abuse function. Some of them are : non-story, list, chat, interactive, improper use of language, ie. obvious spelling and grammer errors (this one makes me laugh), listed in wrong catagory, rating. So you see the list is quite extensive. You have to choose one and then they give you an area where you can expand on the complaint.
I have seen speculation at other discussion boards, that this is being done because of the advertiser's as mentioned before. Also they ran afoul of obsenity rules several years ago, so now there is no posting of NC-17 type stories.
Abuse complaints are not checked out on the site before stories are yanked and Xing will not ask for help concerning this problem. Oh and btw don't kid yourself about money being made from the site. This is Xings testing ground for the bigger and better things he gets paid to do. The plan was always there to spin off the original content site for posssible publishing rights.

Alas, I fear I cannot comment one way or the other on Xing's motives, but the copyright of works published on Fictionpress.net belongs soley to the author.

That's an interesting idea. My imagination insists on an image of some type of cyberperson with a trenchcoat and that weird hat creeping over the screen examining each word with his magnifying glass. I suppose it really isn't funny, but I gave up on FFN a long time ago. My computer blocks that site, so I strongly rely on SoA and the MC. Of course, the only fandom I have time for is LotR, so if I was interested in others, FFN would be the first place I would go. Does anyone know Xing personally? Or at least, as personally as you can over the Internet? Contacting him/her and asking politely what's going on might work wonders. Showing that we're interested in fixing the problem, not just bashing the head honcho, would probably get results much faster than angrily emailing the staff. Coon

Coon Hi Coon, nice to see you here. ;D Ai! I fear that the seeming impossibility of contacting Xing is part of the frustration/aggravation.

Some of us do not meet guidelines of the more privately run, stricter sites unfortunately so we would depend on ff.net. Hi Gwenneth, I was pointed to a new LOTR archive this evening that appears to take all kinds of Tolkien fanfiction, both canon-strict and non-canon. Authors do not appear to be screened (though I may be wrong about that, as I have not looked around properly, yet), it is self-uploading and has a review system. www.lotrfanfiction.com

At the top of the story, it says thus:
A Blue Day in Mirkwood by Carawen [Reviews - 0] Add to Favorites
Click on the word 'Reviews'

I am off to bed now, though, so I will have to review the blue-berried elves tomorrow, okay?

And at the moment, ff.net is not sending me my reviews. I know readers read there for various reasons, but I wish I could encourage them to switch to SoA. It's more reliable and the review system allows for replies, which makes for some nice chat sometimes.

It is reliable, there is a splendid amount of author/reader interaction, the search system is very good, and one does not have to check the rating before clicking on a story.
