This has been bugging me since it happened earlier tonight and I just had to get it out.
I work in a small city that is full of gangs and rather crappy streets. I had to cover a county supervisors meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. and when I left the newspaper building to walk up two blocks to the State Street building, a guy on a bicycle turned around and rode up to me.
Mind you, it is quite dark out by now, only lit by streetlights and there are few people on the streets.
The guy rides up and says, "Wow you are pretty. Are you from around here?"
I AM from around here, but I politely said, "No where near here..." Kept walking...he kept following.
He said something like, "You are so pretty I'd like to see you again..."
Mind you I'm still walking away, trying not to laugh...not that it was a funny situation. I told him, "Sorry, I don't live around here and have to go to work now."
I decided not to walk to the meeting, but to walk to my car nearer to the newspaper. He still followed. As I got in the car he said, "When can I see you again."
I replied, "Sorry..."
Another guy walking down the street asked me if that guy was scaring me, I said no because he wasn't Really all that scary. But it was unnerving. I never really think about the area I work in...but that made me think.
Now mind you, I AM a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and have a lot of martial arts and fighting/self-defense experience. But you never do know what the opponent knows. I was unnerved no doubt. Just felt like sharing this with someone...so why the heck not whoever the heck reads this!
I guess it's a lesson...don't walk in a city alone at night if you are a young woman. It's something so basic that your parents probably tell you all the time. BUT next time I might not be so lucky and just talk my way out of it...next time, I might need to do more and I do not want there to be a next time!!!
