I had always thought that the battle of Dagorlad where Orophir died and the battle where Isildur cut off Sauron's ring were pretty much the same thing. In my mind, Orophir's death happened at the beginning of the battle while cutting the ring off happened at the end, with maybe day or two of fighting in between. This week, I learned that there was 6 years between the two events! So here's my question? Were Thranduil and the Mirkwood elves at the battle where Isildur defeated Sauron? If not, does canon say why not? Any speculations why not? Finally, does anyone want to take a guess why I took over 25 years to figure out this very simple fact of chronology?

Yup, Thranduil and the surviving Wood-elves were indeed present at the battle when Isildur cut the One ring from Sauron's finger (according to the Unfinished Tales.) In fact, Thranduil and his tattered army had not been home long when Isildur was ambushed at the Gladden Fields. According to UT, the orcs that ambushed Isildur were already lying in wait when the Wood-elves passed by on their way home, but let them pass, as Thranduil's army, even tattered, was sufficiently intimidating. (And he and his warriors were near enough to rush to Isildur's aid the ambush took place, though they were far enough away that arrived only in time to prevent the orcs from desecrating the bodies.) Finally, does anyone want to take a guess why I took over 25 years to figure out this very simple fact of chronology? That seems to be the way of Tolkien. There you are are sitting happily for years content with the knowledge that something or other is canon, and then - wham! -- out of the blue, you discover that is it isn't. It's a very unsettling thing.

I beheld the last combat on the slopes of Orodruin, where Gil-galad died, and Elendil fell, and Narsil broke beneath him; but Sauron himself was overthrown, and Isildur cut the Ring from his hand with the hilt-shard of his father's sword, and took it for his own.
But few marked what Isildur did. He alone stood by his father in that last mortal contest; and by Gil-galad only CĂrdan stood, and I. But Isildur would not listen to our counsel.
Both spoken by Elrond, Council of Elrond, FotR
As Karri said, UT mentions that Thranduil led his people home after the whole battle was over, so we know they were there to the end. And Oropher died on the battle plain in the first rush, which although many died, they won the field and the battle moved to Mt Orodruin, where they fought for six more long years. But I always thought Elrond's words interesting that few marked what Isiildur did. When did the others learn of this? Elrond and Cirdan were the only witnesses to Elendil and Gil-galad's fall and Isildur's folly. I have wondered if they told the other leaders right after or if it all came out later.
Interesting plot bunny, Karri, you might have to add it to your hutch!

Elrond and Cirdan were the only witnesses to Elendil and Gil-galad's fall and Isildur's folly. I have wondered if they told the other leaders right after or if it all came out later. For my Thranduil and his mother story, I have Thranduil mention that Elrond informed him of Isildur's actions. Although my story doesn't explicitly say when it takes place, it implies that the time setting is shortly after the battles because Thranduil is still recovering from his wounds. I had no canon clues to base my decision on. I simply decided that if I was Elrond, I would inform the leaders of my allies because I felt they had a right to know.
