Since there is so little written about the sons of Elrond, I thought I would ask how people here view them. In so many fan fiction stories they are viewed (I think it was Karri who once said) "The Fred and George of Middle-Earth." Pranksters, who even though they are nearly 3000 still act like children. Others, (and not to pick on Karri here, but "Biterness" just stands out in my mind) view them as more serious and wise adults.
So I was just wondering how people here saw them and why they view them that way? Also (and I'm going fro my head here so I may not be correct) but didn't they delay their choice of whether to sail or not? and if so, what choice do you think they made?

Hmmm....well, Bitterness (which really will have another chapter soon) is pretty representative of how I view them.
You are right. They did delay their choice. Tolkien seemed partial to separating twins, but I like to think they both choose the fate of the Firstborn.
Edit: I prolly ought to clarify a bit for those not reading Bitterness, eh. ;-) I see the twins as somewhat playful at heart (Tolkien says elves like to tease, to I tend to see all elves as playful at heart), yet also wise and often serious.

I have to admit that the stories that show the 3000 year old twins behaving like 12 year olds drive me up the wall. I want some elven warrior behavior! I want serious adults!
I realize that different people have different tastes and that's fine by me, but there are very few stories out there that show Elladan and Elrohir as I want to see them. I'm deprived!
And I think they chose to sail. To think otherwise is just too sad for Elrond.

My love for Gred & Forge notwithstanding (and not to mention a whole other fandom), I don't particulary care for practical jokes -- not in real life or in fanfic. I usually pass on stories that depict the adult twins are little more than pranksters.
I don't mind if the twins exhibit levity, light-heartedness, or merriment in appropriate settings. They are younger elves, and that is the nature of younger elves, IMO.
But we can't ignore how Celebrian's capture & sailing affected them. To depict the twins as doing little more than dreaming up pratical jokes day in and day out seems to me to be a misintrepretation of what Tolkien wrote.
Like most -- perhaps all -- fans of the twins, I think they eventually sailed West.

I see them as being young and stupid sometimes. I see them that way because that is how they are in most stories. I like it that way because there isn't that many other characters that are funny and stupid so it is kind of a relief to have some one be different. I don't really know about them sailing though.

Personally I like them both ways.
I can see them as enjoying practical jokes and having fun when they are just enjoying life.
If you look at the way Legolas and Gimli joke and the game they play I think elves would have great sense of humor. After all to live such a long serious life would be boring.
But I also can see them as being serious when the need arrives.
It's the same with alot of people in real life. Well me atleast lol. I love a good practicle joke but I can also be one of the most serious person when I have to.
And I do see them sailing but not for along time after Elrond does. Since they know they will see him again I figure they probably stuck around to spend time with Aragorn. After he passed I figure they probably sailed.

I didn't notice this thread until now! Good question!
I too think of the twins in both ways, pranksters and serious. I have written them both ways, even mingled the two personality types into single stories.
I like to think that after Celebrian's capture and subsequent sailing West, the twins would have needed to lighten their moods somehow, otherwise they would fall into despair. Laughter, IMO, is really the best medicine. If you are feeling down, why not play a joke on someone, as long as it's harmless, and lighten your heart.
But, I also believe they were fearless warriors and wise Elves. I try to make them well-rounded characters, not always perfect, but no one really is right?
I have noticed that Elladan is often portrayed as the leader of the two and Elrohir seems to take the background. I tried to change that, make them both equal. I see a lot of fics where Elladan is highly overprotective of Estel as well. I believe that in a way, only because he will feel like the big brother. I was highly overprotective of my little brother, who is now BIGGER then me mind you! And I still do in a way.
All right, enough from me!

I see a lot of fics where Elladan is highly overprotective of Estel as well. I always pictured Elladan as the older twin and therefore more serious and protective. I think I probably got this idea from fanfiction but now it's hard to think of it a different way. I know I've portrayed them as being silly, but I know they're adults. I just find that it becomes hard to picture them a different way after I've read so many stories where they are goof balls. In my mind I always pictured them sailing mainly because I agree with Daw, it's just too sad for Elrond otherwise.
