*starts out with happy dance*
Recently my school participated in a nation wide event called “Mix-it-up-day” where the teachers placed the students in the lunch room at different tables than the ones that the students usually sit. This was done to encourage diversity and to help students to get to know each other.
After the contest was over the guidance councilors started a contest to find out the student’s perception of what they learned and gathered from that experience. The contest had three branches of participation, posters, essays, and poems. I decided at the very end of the contest to enter a poem that I had written called “It was my Problem” I didn’t think much of it and certainly did not think that it had a chance to succeed.
Two days after I had entered the poem we had our annual Holiday assembly and gathered in the gym to listen to the band (which I play the drums in), the French class sing carols, and the Drama club to present a game show. After the band played and before the French class sang, the assistant principal (the one who I called the Grinch…different story ) announced the winners. There were a grand total of three prizes. The third prize winner entered a poster and won a certificate to go to the local hotel/casino’s dinner buffet (which is very yummy). The second prize winner who entered an essay also won a certificate to the buffet. The first place winner’s prize was a gift certificate to the hotel for one over night stay. It included the buffet, the pool, and a movie.
I was the first place winner. I won the poem branch and the overall winner. When my name was called I wasn’t exactly paying attention. I was up on the balcony trying to entertain myself with some of my friends from the band. As it turned out the assistant principal had to turn to one of my friends in the French class and ask for a way to get my attention. My friend told her to shout the words Global Warming which is code for Orlando Bloom during school and around parents. Me, clearly hearing those words spun around and looked at the person who said them. The assistant principal looked at me and told me that my poem had won the grand prize.
The principal had gotten a hold of my parents to ask if I would read my poem in front of the school. She told the whole school that she had and I had no way to back out of it so I read it. Afterwards I got a standing ovation and was asked by more than a few people if I had anything published.
To spend my certificate, I took five of my friends and my mom to the hotel and we stayed up the whole night swimming and watching movies. The room was SO cool too! It was huge! The manager came up to our room to personally congratulate me and to ask if he could have a copy to frame and put in the lobby. It was a beautiful frame too! ;D
A few days later, an essay that I had written on “Alcohol and peer pressure” and my school picture appeared in our newspaper. I had no idea it would be in there. I was so excited! I’ve got people all around town congratulating me now. Our little newspaper goes all around the state of Michigan too! Traverse City, Gaylord, and Saint Ignace.
I feel extra special now and am very happy!
*stops happy dance and starts bouncing up and down* ;D
