A curious thing happened to me today. I was strolling aimlessly through the woods this morning and came across a small blond-haired elfling playing with a toy mithril eagle. He looked at me and smiled mischieviously.
"I know a secret," he said.
"You do?"
He nodded at me. "Do you want to know my secret?" he asked.
I smiled at him and told him that if he told me his secret, it wouldn't be a secret any more.
"That's alright," he answered. "This secret is supposed to be shared."
"Well then, if it's supposed to be shared, I guess you can tell me."
The elfling motioned for me to come closer so that he could tell his secret to me.
"Today is Karri's birthday," he whispered.
"It is?"
"Yes. And Ada is planning a big party for her this afternoon. There will be tea and seed cakes and presents. I hope she gets lots of toys to play with," he added wistfully.
"I hope so too. Do you think your adar would mind if I told some of my friends about Karri's birthday?"
The elfling shook his head. "Ada wants people to share this secret. Ada says that everyone should come to the party. 'The more the merrier,' Ada said. I don't know what that means, but Ada says everyone will understand." The elfling looked at me, wide-eyed with seriousness. "Will you come?"
I smiled at the child. "Of course, I'll come. And I'll bring some friends with me, just as your adar wants."
"And presents?"
"Of course."
"Toys? Toys that Karri would like me and her to play with?" he asked hopefully.
I chuckled and assured him that there would be plenty of toys for the two of them play with. The elfling's face glowed at the thought.
"Well, little one, if I am to be ready for Karri's party, I had better head home. Thank you for sharing your secret with me. I will share it with any friends I meet, if that is acceptable."
The elfling thanked me in a gracious manner far beyond what I would have expected from one of so few years and returned to playing with his toy eagle. I left him there and continued my stroll, this time at a faster pace and with a definite purpose. There was much to do in order to be ready for the King's celebration of Karri's birthday this afternoon.
